In one of the most un-eagerly, non-anticipated competition launches in sporting history, Super Rugby is underway for 2017. The marketing geniuses at Super Rugby just keep hitting it out of the park. Firstly, clearly bereft of ideas and looking to try to reach out to those elusive ‘millennials’, they decided to market the competition as ‘Super Boom Boom’, otherwise known as Aaron Smith’s standard airport experience.
Then to kick the competition off with a bang, they opened it up in a true rugby backwater (Melbourne) with a mouthwatering clash between two of the competitions perennial also-rans (Rebels vs Blues). And on a Thursday night no less. I mean, wouldn’t you want to make some noise on opening night with…I don’t know, maybe the defending champs at home against another conference heavyweight? Or at least some type of big conference rivalry? But Rebels vs Blues in Melbourne?!? Really?!?
At least we all have our Fantasy Rugby teams to focus on, that’s where the real action and excitement is going to be this Super Rugby season anyway. Great to see Rieko Ioane living up to the hype early and dotting down three times. He’s currently ranked 22nd by us but he has top 10 upside so those that took a chance on him early have been handsomely rewarded in the first game of the season.
